Proverbs 31

As I was scrolling through Instagram earlier today and I realized that many posts featured the hashtag #internationalwomansday. I clicked on the tag and it dawned on me that today is (you guessed it) International Woman’s day! In case you haven’t been on social media today- International Woman’s day is a celebration of woman’s achievements throughout history usually held on the 8th of March. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a feminist but women are pretty awesome right? I am proud to be a woman but I am especially proud to be a woman of God!

I have been looking at articles about the most powerful women from history and they all generally say the same thing! The women I most commonly see are Coco Chanel, Cleopatra, Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst and so many more. I agree! These women have helped gain the rights we have today but you can find some of the most amazing and powerful women ever in the bible!

God created men and women to be different but He also created us to be equally as important! Us women played a very important part in the Lord’s plan back in biblical times but modern day females seem to have forgotten that we still do! God’s plan is still ongoing and He wants us to carry out His plan during your earthly life. Proverbs 31 is a guideline for Christian women that we should definitely read and study!

You may be familiar with Proverbs 31. Proverbs 31:10-31 seems to be the go-to chapter for most christian girls and I can see why! It is a step by step guide to being a Godly woman which is exactly what we need!

So in verse 10 it starts by saying “She is worth far more than rubies”.  “A ruby is fiery red in colour; due to an element called chromium. A ruby is known to be the queen of stones, the most royal of all gemstones. While doing much research on rubies I discovered that a real ruby can generally cost anywhere from the hundreds to millions of dollars. Rubies are imperfect, but in their imperfection is where they are valued the most. There are treatments that can change their clarity and make them more beautiful to the eye, but ultimately it diminishes their value. There is so much more to know and understand about rubies, but I just wanted to give you a taste of it. That was pertinent information that we needed to know regarding rubies. This background story helps us understand our worth a lot better.”  We are so incredibly important to God that we are worth more than the most expensive jewel. I don’t know about you but I’ve felt worthless many times before but we really need to remember that not only are we loved on this earth but we are loved by the most powerful and eternal love! We are loved by God!

The next couple of verses (Proverbs 31:11-12) talks about marriage. Her husband trusts her completely. With her, he has everything he needs. She does him good and not harm for as long as she lives.” You do not have to be married to be a 31 woman. You can be a trustworthy friend, daughter, girlfriend, niece. A trustworthy woman is reliable, honest, faithful and full of integrity. She always does what’s best for the people around her and cares for them no matter what.

She looks for wool and flax and likes to work with her hands. She is like a trader’s ship, bringing food from far away. She gets up while it is still dark and prepares food for her family and feeds her servant girls”-Proverbs 31:13-15. A 31 woman is selfless and caring! She works so hard to make sure her loved ones are healthy and happy, putting their needs before her own. She also looks after her home making sure it is a clean, comfortable environment to work and dwell in. She is a hard working provider and is good to her family. Her children speak well of her. Her husband also praises her, saying, “There are many fine women, but you are better than all of them.””-Proverbs 31:28-29

“She inspects a field and buys it. With money she earned, she plants a vineyard.  She does her work with energy, and her arms are strong. She knows that what she makes is good. Her lamp burns late into the night. She makes thread with her hands and weaves her own cloth.”-Proverbs 31:16-19. God wants us to use our time well! Every morning we have is a blessing! He has given us the gift of another day and we need to use it to work hard and to glorify him, just like a 31 girl. She gets up early and uses her time well. She has endurance and works into the night and gets the job done (as well as 8 hours sleep). “She watches over her family and never wastes her time”(Proverbs 31:27) A 31 Woman is a business woman! The Lord is always providing us with opportunities and we need to grab hold of them and work hard. She has physical, emotional and spiritual strength through God! “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”-Philippians 4-13. A 31 girl is always developing her skills and making sure she uses them to love others, help in the church and glorify God.

The woman in Proverbs 31 is charitable. “She welcomes the poor and helps the needy.”-(Proverbs 31:20) She helps the less fortunate with open arms and without judgement. You can be charitable by giving to charity, buying someone a coffee, making cookies for a friend who is upset and just by caring and being as helpful as possible.

“She does not worry about her family when it snows, because they all have fine clothes to keep them warm. She makes coverings for herself;  her clothes are made of linen and other expensive material. Her husband is known at the city meetings, where he makes decisions as one of the leaders of the land.  She makes linen clothes and sells them and provides belts to the merchants.”-Proverbs 31:20-24. She makes sure her family is well dressed and that she is well dressed. This doesn’t mean that you have to be fashionable and keeping up with the trends, in fact God doesn’t want us to be consumed by looks. It means that we need to make sure we are dressed well for the weather and to care for yourself. The Lord wants us to be modest and safe and as Christian women we should make sure that others and ourselves are dressed in a way that gives ourselves worth.  Verse 23 is a difficult one as it is about her husband. As a single girl we need to look for a guy who loves God, is a good husband and a good leader.

“She is strong and is respected by the people. She looks forward to the future with joy.  She speaks wise words and teaches others to be kind.”-Proverbs 31:25-26. A 31 Woman is honorable and joyful. Another version of the scripture says “She is clothed in strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future”. The only thing she fears is God and she trusts her future to him. He makes her joyful and praise him. The joy of the lord is her strength. She is wise and careful in what she says. She makes sure that her words honor God and help other people to honor God.

“Charm can fool you, and beauty can trick you, but a woman who respects the Lord should be praised. Give her the reward she has earned; she should be praised in public for what she has done.”-Proverbs 31:30-31.  Finally but most importantly, a Proverbs 31 girl lives a godly life. She messes up regularly but knows that the Lord will forgive her and she tries her hardest to live a pure life. She trusts, respects and fears the lord and because of this she will be rewarded in heaven.
“Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God”-1 Corinthians 10:31

I really hope you like this short study of Proverbs 31! I would really recommend reading over it and studying it for yourself! I will link a book that I read in my early teens all about proverbs 31! (it’s so good and I would definitely recommend!!)
